Marvel's Avengers is the next big project from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, which will see players taking the role of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes when the game releases for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on the
15th of May in 2020.
A recent interview with the head of Crystal Dynamics, Scott Amos, has revealed that
Marvel's Avengers is, indeed, one of the studio's biggest projects; Amos reveals, in fact, that this is their biggest project yet.
"
From our side, it's the biggest thing that we've ever done. We now have five studios working together to pull this off. Crystal Dynamics at Redwood Shores, we opened a new studio in Bellevue called Crystal North West. We have our partners in the Netherlands, Nixxes, which has a big team of people who we've worked with for 20 years. Eidos Montreal was our sister studio for all of Tomb Raider, so they're working on this. And even Square Enix Japan has folks from the tech group working with us."
Amos mentions that they have been constantly raising their own bar, illustrating how they've worked on the new
Tomb Raider series by going beyond their boundries; something that they're definitely doing again for
Marvel's Avengers.
"
We've literally had to put these five studios together and say: 'We're going this far. Tomb Raider, awesome. Rise of the Tomb Raider, even better. Shadow of the Tomb Raider... and it's like no, we're going beyond the boundaries'."
The way Crystal Dynamics is managing to do this is by carefully hiring experts that have worked on renowned series like Naughty Dog's
Uncharted and
The Last of Us series, as well as the critically acclaimed
God of War from Santa Monica Studio.
"
We've had to change how we work, how we are organised as a team, the number of people we need to do this, the number of external partners... We've had to go hire experts like Shaun Escayg, who is our creative director. He told stories for Uncharted and The Last of Us [at Naughty Dog], we needed him to help tell this story. Dave Fifield was a game director who worked on Halo and Call of Duty, we needed him to help us with multiplayer. We go around and look at what we need. Who are the experts? Vince Napoli, he's our lead combat designer, he just did God of War, come help us with the combat. We cherry-picked the best of the best and said: 'Let's put this together in a new way for something bigger than we've ever done'."
Reception for the
Marvel's Avengers trailers was more positive than mixed, although there was a fair share of fans that weren't too sold on the game mainly because of some nitpicks like the graphics looking outdated, or the lack of gameplay shown. Regardless, it is nice to see that the people over at Crystal Dynamics are doing their best to give players the best
Avengers experience.
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel's The Avengers will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on the 15th of May in 2020.
