Techland's Dying Light 2 was announced during Microsoft's E3 2018 media briefing, and once again, we’ll get to leap and fight through (and over) a zombie-infested city, run missions for "leftovers", and, obviously, survive. The sequel is adding even more mechanics to the game by having players' choices affect the story (co-written by Chris Avellone) and the future of a fictional European metropolis.
For example, you can choose to free up a water control point to help a nearby neighborhood or team up with a gang that controls it. Despite being more story-focused, Dying Light 2 still features an advanced co-op mode. In an interview with Gaming Bolt, Luc Baghadoust, producer at Techland explained how those two system will work together to create a truly mesmerizing gaming experience.
“You'll get some benefit out of playing with your friends. Aside from that, you’ll also be able to experience other versions of the story, other directions the narrative can take you," Baghadoust said. “We believe co-op is deep in the Dying Light DNA. So you’ll be able to experience all of this in co-op. And the cool part is that each player can create his own version of the city. So if I play my game in my world it will be different than the things I will see when I visit your world," the producer concluded.
It sounds like Techland has decided to put more emphasis on Dying Light 2's storyline and co-op experience, as the first game's core gameplay still holds up well. 2015's first-person survival featured up to 4 players in the co-op mode, allowing you to play the entire campaign (except for the final mission) with your friends, but Techland hasn't explained how the mode will work in the sequel yet.
