Released in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy was a massive commercial hit for Warner Bros. Games. Just weeks after the game launched, it had sold more than 12 million copies, pretty much ensuring a sequel would be green-lit. Now, with more than 30 million copies sold globally, Warner Bros. is all-in on the video game franchise, calling a sequel "a very big priority."
We haven't gotten an official announcement from Warner Bros. or developer Avalanche Software, but a new article from Variety delves into the company's plans for the Harry Potter franchise, including the Hogwarts Legacy series.
“We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that,” said David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep ‘Harry Potter’ fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them.”
Hogwarts Legacy is set in place a century prior to the Harry Potter novels. The player controls a fully customizable student enrolled in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and embarks on an adventure to unearth an ancient secret concealed within the wizarding world. Although the game features its own original storyline, there are numerous references and easter eggs that fans of the Harry Potter franchise can appreciate.
With the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, Warner Bros. is said to be "coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements... with storylnies that will play out int he Harry Potter HBO series coming from Warner Bros. Television."
“The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year," said David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Plans for the Harry Potter live-action television series were first reported in 2021. Three years later, the series is still in early development, with casting only recently underway. Specific details are still under wraps, though early reports indicated that each season of the series would focus on one book in the Harry Potter series with plans that the project would run for "10 consecutive years."
“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content in September, assuring fans it would be "a faithful adaptation.”
With the Harry Potter series on Max covering the books, it's possible that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy could feature Harry, Hermione, or Ron. Or perhaps it will just feature story elements that reference the series itself. We don't quite know yet, and seeing as how both projects are still far off, it's unlikely we'll get any concrete details anytime soon.
