Earlier this week, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics dropped some great news for Spider-Man fans, revealing that the web-headded superhero would be joining the highly anticipated MARVEL's Avengers as one of the post-launch characters.
Unfortunately for some, the developers made it very clear that this was a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 exclusive character, and that the beloved superhero would not be present in other platforms in which MARVEL's Avengers will be releasing on; namely the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Of course this has caused some controversy, since many consider unfair that Spider-Man will be a console-exclusive character. It takes a few minutes of reading through the comments on any social media platform to see how upset fans are that console exclusivity for MARVEL's Avengers is a thing.
In a recent interview with IGN, however, Head of Crystal Dynamics Scot Amos has revealed that no other characters will be revealed to be console exclusives from now on, it's only Spider-Man.
"That is the only character that we are doing that way," explained Amos, while also adding that there are still a lot of superheroes to be unveiled in the future.
"I would say that MARVEL's Avengers has a lot of heroes, and with the scope and the breadth of this game and this universe, players are going to have their hands full with a lot to play with. And as we have just announced with Hawkeye, there are more heroes to come.
"So this is an opportunity to celebrate [Spider-Man's addition] uniquely for those players [on PlayStation] because of that relationship, but I think there's so much of a world for people to explore, I wouldn't look as that as a reason not to embrace it [the opportunity to add Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5]. I would say, look at all this stuff you get to play with," Amos concluded.
At this point, there isn't much that Amos can say to non-PlayStation players that will make them feel better about the decision to make Spider-Man an exclusive character in MARVEL's Avengers. Spider-Man is the most iconic MARVEL character out there, and making him a console exclusive has been considered to be an anti-consumer practice.
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
MARVEL's Avengers will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on Friday the 4th of September; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X release date to be determined.
