MARVEL'S AVENGERS Creative Director Issues Shocking Apology For The Divisive Video Game

It's fair to say Marvel's Avengers failed to live up to the lofty expectations of fans, and the title's creative director has now issued an unexpected apology and offered a brief explanation of sorts...

There was a lot of excitement surrounding Marvel's Avengers prior to its release in 2020, but the game failed to live up to expectations. It boasted a fun storyline and some great performances from its cast, but a few standout moments weren't enough to make up for a poorly handled loot-based system and awful open-world maps.

The game would prove to be something of a flop, with even the famous Marvel branding falling to help it turn a profit.

During a recent interview with EDGE Magazine (via GamesRadar+), Marvel's Avengers creative director Cezar Virtosu pointed to a difficult development process being at the heart of the game's problems.

"It was a challenging production, let's say," he said, clearly unwilling to divulge too much about where things went wrong. He did, however, add "I apologize for that" when asked for his thoughts on the finished product. Clearly, he's no happier than fans when it comes to how the game turned out.

Virtosu actually left Crystal Dynamics to focus on The Lords of the Fallen reboot, so Marvel's Avengers is now a long-forgotten memory (or at least one he wishes he could forget).

Not too long ago, we learned that active development for the game has ended, with support set to be discontinued on September 30 (the same day Digital purchases of the title will also end). While free DLC has rolled out on a fairly consistent basis since launch, Xbox owners were very upset when it was confirmed Spider-Man will remain a PlayStation exclusive.

It's a shame Marvel's Avengers was such a letdown, but there are plenty of other games set in that universe on the way.

Among them are Marvel's Spider-Man 2, along with untitled Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America/Black Panther titles. As for whether we'll see The Avengers assemble on consoles again, it probably won't be for some time.
