The third installment in the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise is set to arrive this September, and like the previous two games we can expect Lara Croft's adventure in Shadow of the Tomb Raider to be a dark and gritty one

However, while Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) set the precedent for a darker adventure, a recent interview with Camilla Luddington suggests we could see Lara Croft take an even darker turn.

“Yes,” Luddington told Entertainment Weekly, when asked whether the game’s protagonist will cross some lines she wouldn’t have in past adventures. “What’s super interesting to me about this specific game is that there are moments when you could see Lara almost as a villain as opposed to the hero.”

Though it definitely sounds like Lara will undergo a serious transformation in the game, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise considering the first cinematic trailer for the highly anticipated video game saw Lara strike fear into her enemies in a brutal fashion.

Also, along with seeing Lara dip her toes in the dark side, Luddington explained that players will have some empathy for the antagonist of the story, Doctor Dominguez .

“You could almost understand the villain in our game, understand that he could possibly be the hero,” Luddington said, before returning to the tough moral choices Lara will make. “She definitely crosses lines and lines she never intended to cross. She feels like she’s lost herself. To me, it’s very interesting when you have a character who is a leader of a game and you start to question their motives. You start to question if what they’re doing or trying to succeed is, in fact, the right thing.”

Aside from the hard moral questions in the game, Luddington added that she doesn’t see Shadow of the Tomb Raider as “an end to Lara Croft’s story,” and revealed the game will shed some more light on Lara’s father.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 14th.
