With
Quantum Break, Remedy Entertainment tried to make a more cinematic, story-driven experience that would satisfy two groups of players: those who enjoy watching movies more than playing games and those who enjoy playing games more that watching movies. As you've probably guessed, Remedy’s attempt at merging those totally different worlds of movies and games (starring Shawn Ashmore, Aidan Gillen, Dominic Monaghan, Lance Reddick, and Courtney Hope) left both groups pretty unimpressed.
In
Control, Remedy will focus more on the actual gameplay and giving the player chances to use their creativity rather than asking them to watch extended live-action cutscenes with high-profile actors. "
We want to keep building worlds, but make them places you explore,"
Control's Director Mikael Kasurinen explained in an interview with Eurogamer, "
not just blast through in one story arc then you're done. The world should be something that exists which you can find more things to do with."
"
We were looking at people playing Quantum on Twitch," Communications Manager Thomas Puha added. "
We'd spent four to five years on it and then it was over for them in eight hours. There's something very strange about that. We want to make sure we can keep building on Control for a while to come," suggesting that the Finnish studio already has some plans for the post-launch support.
"
This is our own IP, we decide what's going to happen with it. The smartest thing for us is to do what we believe in, be ready to be a bit weird, be controversial even - let's try to make a statement than play it safe. That's part of the exhale after Quantum Break. Control is very much an expression of that," Kasurinen concluded.
Considering that
Control launches this August, we should learn a whole lot more about Remedy's supernatural extravaganza in the coming weeks. In
Control, you play as the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena. After a fatal accident, you have to take back control – and save the world.
After a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an otherworldly threat, you become the new Director struggling to regain Control. This supernatural third-person action-adventure game will challenge you to master a combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments, while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.
Control is coming to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on August 27, 2019.
