An expansion for Hogwarts Legacy has reportedly been canceled by Warner Bros. as part of the company's ongoing restructuring. Citing people familiar with the situation, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier claims that the expansion had been planned for release this year alongside a "Definitive Edition" of the wizarding adventure game.
Reports of a Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition date back to October of last year. It was believed to add around 10-15 hours of additional content, including a new story quest, side quests, activities,a nd outfits. Warner Bros. never officially announced the expansion or the Definitive Edition,t hough.
Released in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing game from Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games. Set in the wizarding world first introduced in the beloved Harry Potter books, the player controls a student enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. In the open-world action RPG, they would learn to wield an array of magical abilities and objects while embarking on a journey to uncover an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. Players are able to explore the open world and freely roam Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest, and the surrounding Overland area, while learning spells, brewing potions, and tending to magical beasts.
Hogwarts Legacy was both a critical and commercial success. The game received reviews scored in the mid-80s on Metacritic while general audiences also found it "generally favorable."
As of February 2023, Hogwarts Legacy had sold more than 12 million copies, generating $850 million in global sales. By May of that year, sales had eclipsed 15 million copies worldwide, while total revenue surpassed $1 billion. As of October 2024, Hogwarts Legacy is one of the best-selling video games of all time with more than 30 million copies sold.
One would think that Warner Bros. would want to lean into expansion or DLC for Hogwart Legacy as easy revenue for a game that already sold millions; however, Schreier claims that the expansion was canceled "in part due to concerns that the amount of content was not substantial enough to justify the price being considered."
The focus will instead shift to development of the planned sequel. We're not sure exactly when we'll see or hear more about Hogwarts Legacy 2, but there was chatter that the sequel game could tie into HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series.
As reported last November, Warner Bros. is said to be "coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements... with storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series coming from Warner Bros. Television."
