During Summer Game Fest last June, studio Digital Eclipse and toy maker Hasbro revealed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewindan retro-inspired sidescrolling brawler that harkens back to the arcade gaming days of the 90s. Celebrating 30 years of Power Rangers engertainment , the game blends the best of the franchise's "brawling blasting, fighting, and driving action."

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind was a show-stopper, especially for anyone who grew up gaming in the 90s. Its gameplay features all the nostalgic elements from classic arcade gaming, without the requirement of tokens.

Developed as a love letter to the franchise, Mighty Morphon Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind features an original storyline "that both respects and remixes Power Rangers lore with scenarios and gameplay that will be both familiar and new to [Might Morphin Power Rangers] fans."

While the announcement trailer revealed over the summer was mostly focused on gameplay consisting of beating up Rita Repulsa’s army of Putty Patrollers, there's much more to the game than initially shown. Much of the gameplay takes inspiration from Sega's super-scaler games like Space Harrier and Out Run, according Digital Eclipse's Dan Amrich.

"Before polygons ruled the earth, these games simulated 3D movement with a series of fast-moving 2D sprites," Amrich explained. "These are designed to deliver fast, in-your-face scrolling action, and we thought they’d be a perfect way to let MMPR fans take down some of the Rangers’ most famous foes."

Not sure what he's talking about? Check out the trailer below which not only provides some context for the twistytime travel plot, but also shows some of the other forms of gameplay, especially as you battle Goldar.

Oh, and it also confirms the release date for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind: December 10, 2024.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, the team faces off against a robotic reincarnation of the Power Rangers' long-time nemesis. Robo-Rita has conjured a portal to send herself back in time so she can finally vanquish the Power Rangers by forming an alliance with her younger self. Working together, Robo-Rita and Rita Repulsa rewind, rewrite, and remix the past in an attempt to stop the very formation of the Power Rangers, altering the course of history.

Will the two Ritas and their army of monstrous enemies from across the MMPR timeline finally succeed in destroying the Power Rangers? Or will these teenagers with attitude learn to work together and counter this catastrophic chronological collaboration?

Experience the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers again – for the first time! The past will never be the same…

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind will be released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The game is currently available for preorder with a slight discount from its regular price of $34.99.
