Odyssey takes place long before last year's Origins, during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. That war happened between 431-404 BC, nearly 400 years before the events of Origins. The fact that Odyssey is a prequel, gives the Ubisoft Quebec team an opportunity to show the "real" origins of the Assassin's Creed universe and introduce some important historical figures like Socrates.

Players will take control of a Spartan rejected by their family, who's making the journey from outcast mercenary to legendary hero, learning the truth about their past along the way. This hero is a descendant of the legendary Leonidas, King of Sparta. Actor Elias Toufexis has revealed that he will actually play (via motion capture) King Leonidas in the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Most gamers know who Toufexis is, if not by his face, then by his signature voice. He has played characters in several beloved gaming franchises, including Assassin’s Creed (Federico Auditore da Firenze in II, Jacques Roux in Unity), and Splinter Cell. Of course, he’s most recognized for his portrayal of Adam "I Never Asked For This" Jensen in Deus Ex (in both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided).

Basing on the gameplay footage revealed bu Ubisoft, it looks like we will have a chance to witness (or maybe even take part in) the Battle of Thermopylae and see the sacrifice of the legendary warrior king who led the allied Greek forces to a last stand during the Second Persian War while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army. His broken spear will also play a huge role in the game, as it's one of the all-powerful Pieces of Eden.

Take control of your destiny and write your own epic odyssey as you journey to become a legendary Spartan hero. Live incredible adventures in a world where every choice matters. Rejected by your family, you must embark on an adventure from outcast mercenary to legendary Spartan hero to uncover the truth about your past.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey will release October 5, 2018 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
