With reports that filming is already underway currently in Italy, Netflix has revealed several exciting additions to the cast of its upcoming live-action Assassin's Creed TV series.
Per an official press release, Noomi Rapace (Lamb, Prometheus), Ramzy Bedia (Of Money and Blood, Haunted Minds), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible, The Stranger), and Corrado Invernizzi (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari) have joined the series in recurring roles.
After taking nearly five years to develop the series, progress on the adaptation has fully ramped up as cameras are rolling on the video game series that stars Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing, Tuesday), Toby Wallace (Euphoria Season 3, The Society), Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Tiny Beautiful Things), Laura Marcus (Bad Education, Death by Lightning), and Zachary Hart (Slow Horses, Black Doves Season 2).
“When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President, Scripted Series.
“Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come. Guided by the deft hands of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has carefully crafted an epic adventure that both honors the legacy of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and invites longtime fans and newcomers alike to experience the thrill of the Brotherhood as never before.”
Emmy nominees Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming, The Killing) will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
The synopsis for the series states that the, "Assassin's Creed live-action series is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions: one set on determining mankind's future through control and manipulation, the other fighting to preserve free will. The series follows characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity's destiny."
Per What's On Netflix, the show is speculated to be set in Ancient Rome. However, the site cautions that Ezio won't be the focal point, as their sources say the Netflix adaptation will consist of original characters.
The Assassin’s Creed series follows the age-old conflict between two secretive groups: the Assassins, who fight for freedom, and the Templars, who seek control and order.
To date, only one major (critically maligned) live-action Assassin’s Creed project has been released, a Michael Fassbender-led adaptation which hit theaters in 2016.
While no additional live-action movies have followed, the franchise has expanded its universe through several animated shorts and series, which explore side stories and deepen the overall lore beyond the main games.
