RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE: Capcom Has Explained Why They Decided Not To Call This New Game "RESIDENT EVIL 8"

Resident Evil Village was announced last month, and fans wondered why Capcom didn't name it Resident Evil 8. A recent interview has revealed the reason, and it does make sense within the context of the game.

During Sony's special PlayStation 5 presentation last month, Capcom took the opportunity to reveal a brand-new intellectual property in the form of Pragmata, but they also announced the newest entry in their critically acclaimed Resident Evil series.

To the surprise of many, the game wasn't called Resident Evil 8 — since capcom decided to call this new title Resident Evil Village, although the number 8 was actually highlighted in the game's title with the V, I, and L letters in the word "Village" serving as the Roman numeral equivalent of 8.

Before Capcom even announced Resident Evil Village, information leaked online had already revealed that the game would not be called Resident Evil 8, even when it was also revealed to be a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 — which also led some people to believe that this wasn't really Residnet Evil 8, but some sort of a glorified expansion, or a spin-off.

We all know that Resident Evil Village is Resident Evil 8, and a recent interview has actually given us a pretty good reason why Capcom decided to ditch the number from this new entry in the long-running survival-horror series.

Resident Evil Village Producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano were asked by Famitsu, as translated by Kotaku, why did Capcom decide to include the Roman numeral VIII in Resident Evil Village instead of simply calling it Resident Evil 8.

"You could call the actual Village another character in the game, and we did that because we would like players to understand that," was the response that Famitsu got. This prompted them to ask which is the game's official abbreviation: "RE8" or "Village", to and the producers revealed that "there isn’t really an official abbreviation, but we’d just be happy if you remembered Village."

So, there you have it. Capcom considers that the Village itself is reason enough to call this new game Resident Evil Village. Let's remember that they sort of did the same thing with Resident Evil 7's logo in which the letters VIL are also highlighted in a way that it looks like the number 7 in Roman numerals. Whatever the case, Resident Evil Village is Resident Evil 8. Case closed.

Years after the tragic events of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Ethan Winters has started over with his wife Mia, finally living in peace and putting the past behind them. However, Chris Redfield, the legendary hero from previous Resident Evil games, suddenly disrupts their life, throwing a devastated Ethan into a new and twisted nightmare in search of answers.

Resident Evil Village is expected to release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC(Steam) in 2021.
