Heading into Summer Game Fest 2025, one of the big rumors was that Capcom would finally announce Resident Evil 9. Well, an announcement was made confirming development, but it was more like one big tease.
After a brief cinematic celebrating past Resident Evil titles, the video cut to actress Maggie Robertson, the voice of Alcina Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village, wishing the franchise a happy birthday. She then introduced Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi who had a special message for fans.
"Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March. We truly appreciate your support," Jun Takeuchi began.
"Now, about the latest Resident Evil game you've all been waiting for," he continued, "bear with us a little longer, just a blink of an eye, and it'll be ready. We're incredibly grateful for your ongoing support of the Resident Evil series. Thank you again."
And, well, that was it. No formal announcement or reveal, no teaser trailer, nothing but Takeuchi thanking fans and telling us to be patient as they continue to work on the next Resident Evil game.
As I put the finishing touches on my initial draft, "Capcom's RESIDENT EVIL 9 Announcement At Summer Game Fest Was Just One Big Tease," Summer Game Fest 2025 came to a close with one final reveal.
"This one comes from a studio that is no stranger to delivering blockbuster games time and again," teased host Geoff Keighley. "When I first got a glimpse of this game last summer, I was absolutely blown away by the scale, scope, and ambition of this developer's vision. And while there are many places this game could've been revealed, we are so deeply honored that we get to share with the world at Summer Game Fest."
As it turns out, the final game reveal was none other than Resident Evil Requiem, and it's set to release on February 27, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. It will also be playable at Gamescom this August.
Resident Evil Requiem is the highly anticipated ninth title in the mainline Resident Evil series. Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core.
A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team's depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that's more immersive than ever before.
Unfortunately, no actual gameplay details were shared, but Keighley described Resident Evil: Requiem as a "bold shift for the franchise both in tone and in gameplay, and today's reveal isn't just about survival horror. Expect high-stakes cinematic action, too, with much more to share soon leading up to its launch."
Development on Resident Evil Requiem reportedly began all the way back in early 2017. There have since been numerous leaks and insider reports for the game, which was initially envisioned as an open-world multiplayer experience based on the initial sales performance of Resident Evil 7. However, following the successful release of Resident Evil Village in 2021, the game underwent a significant reboot. It's now reported that Resident Evil 9 — now officially titled Resident Evil: Requiem — will be a single-player experience more in line with the series' traditional roots.
More details for Resident Evil Requiem will hopefully be shared soon!
