Marvel's Spider-Man was, without a doubt, one of 2018's best games. In addition to glowing reviews and numerous awards, the game sold incredibly well. The latest figure had
Marvel's Spider-Man with
over nine million copies sold as of November 25, 2018, a number that has surely grown in the months since. On top of that, it had become
the fastest-selling superhero game in U.S. history.
Given that kind of success, a sequel to the critically acclaimed game seems almost inevitable. Although nothing has formally been announced, it seems like work has already begun. A cryptic tweet from Insomniac Games' Bryan Intihar, who served as creative director on
Marvel's Spider-Man, reveals that he has already shared a "first story draft to others."
Now before we get too excited, it should be noted that nothing in Intihar's tweet suggests that this story draft is actually for a sequel to
Marvel's Spider-Man. But past comments made by the creative director made it sound like a sequel was very much in the plans from the start.
Following
Marvel's Spider-Man's launch a few months back, Intihar actually commented on the potential future plans for the franchise.
"I think that’s the fun. There’s a plan. I think there are many different ways we can go. Also, I just want to digest what people are thinking about the game," he said at the time (via
DualShockers).
In that same interview, he even suggested that the Venom storyline could be a fun one to explore. He was specifically asked about the Black Suit version of Spider-Man and why it wasn't included in the game, to which he responded:
“I think that something like that suit deserves its day in the spotlight. Just making it an unlockable suit wouldn’t be doing it justice. It’s one of the best stories for Spider-Man and I think that it’s a complex story. That story needs to be told and it needs to be told in the way that Insomniac would tell it.”
Again, none of this confirms that a sequel to
Marvel's Spider-Man is in the works, but it certainly sounds like Insomniac Games isn't short on ideas.
Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games, and Marvel have teamed up to create a brand-new and authentic Spider-Man adventure. This isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve met or ever seen before. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in Marvel's New York. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.
Marvel's Spider-Man is now available exclusively on PlayStation 4.
