Developer Nacon has shared a new behind-the-scenes video for Terminator: Survivors that dives deeper into the making of the upcoming survival game.
As the franchise's first open-world survival game, players are tasked with surviving a post-apocalyptic world following the events of Judgement Day. Set a few years after Skynet attained self-awareness and launched its global nuclear assault, humanity is now fragmented and living in small pockets of alliances and factions. And everyone is fighting for their own survival. Playable alone or in co-op, players must scavenge resources to build a base of operations for mankind — all while being hunted relentlessly by a single T-800.
The video below delves into the inspiration of Terminator: Survivors, offering insight into the gameplay and what the developers are hoping to achieve.
"We had several reasons we decided to develop a survival game in the Terminator universe," explains Marco Ponte, CEO & Creative Director at Nacon. "The first two movies of the Terminator saga are stories about survival with characters being hunted down by the Terminator. We really wanted to recreate this feeling of constant chase."
"We also felt the Terminator timeline, the post-apocalyptic period and especially the events after Judgement Day are the perfect fit in terms of environment to set a survival game," he continues. "Finally, even if already seen a couple of times in the films, this period has only been partially explored, so being able to flesh this period out and showcase the life of survivors during this time, there's no greater honor as fans."
As an open-world game, there's plenty for players to do and explore. "Every character, every location has something to tell," details Mauro Ferrari, Art Director. "And this happens on multiple levels, considering the periods before the war, during the war, and after the war."
Nacon turned to James Cameorn's Terminator movies for direct inspiration for the game's atmosphere. "From the first movie, we extracted the tense and suspenseful atmosphere," Ferrari reveals. "The sensation of being hunted down, and facing an absolutely invincible enemy." It was previously confirmed that the T-800 chasing you is a "relentless and formidable hunter that cannot be stopped," which gives players little option but to run in order to survive.
Nacon was also inspired by the action scenes and pacing from the second movies, while paying attention the choice and variety of locations. The developer was also inspired by other sci-fi and action movies from the '80s and '90s.
While exploring the environment, players will encounter various factions, each with their own vision for the world, individual objectives, and different beliefs about Skynet and what's happening behind the scenes.
We unfortunately, don't get any real look at gameplay as the video is mostly accompanied by concept art and development footage, but Nacon explains that combat is "realistic and hardcore, which means that if your approach isn't calculated and tactical, you can die very easily."
