Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2's Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot seems to have taken some liberties in regards to the story, and Piccolo destroying the moon is one of the more controversial ones.

Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2's Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot released last friday, and players have already had the whole weekend to relive one of the most iconic stories in manga and anime history; playing as their favourite characters, and fighting powerful enemies.

Some other keen-eyed fans who have been playing the game have also noticed some rather interesting inconsistencies that seem to contradict the Dragon Ball Z manga and anime, like Twitter user @DragonBallBLK; who noticed that Piccolo destroying the moon may not even be canon.

According to an entry on the the game's Z Encyclopedia, Piccolo didn't really destroy the moon when trying to return Gohan to his normal state, since the entry says it is actually an illusion. As per the entry itself, it reads as follows:

Much like his father Goku, Gohan is capable of transforming into a Great Ape upon viewing a full moon. Similar to how Master Roshi destroyed the moon when Goku transformed, Piccolo destroys the moon when Gohan transforms—or so it seems. In truth, Piccolo creates an illusion in which the moon only appears to be destroyed.

While this may not be too much of a big deal, especially since it could well-be something that was somehow lost in translation, some fans are already upset about the fact that it says this is an illusion of the moon that Piccolo created, when it was actually an illusion created by Goku's ship in one of the filler episodes of the series.

So, all in all, Piccolo did destroy an illusion of the moon, he just didn't create it. Again, inconsistencies like this exist not only due to mistranslations, but also within the anime and manga versions of the story, so it is best to think of this as an inconsistency and leave it at that.

Relive the thrilling story of Kakarot, the legendary Saiyan better known as Goku, in the all-new Action-RPG DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT, coming early 2020. DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT will include English and Japanese voice-over along with subtitles in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, as well as Russian, Polish and Arabic.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC(digital).
