Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been delayed to 2028. The confirmation came directly from Amazon’s video game boss Jeffrey Gattis, who stated that the next major entry in the series will follow Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis rather than launch alongside or shortly after it.

Gattis told The Game Business that Legacy of Atlantis is locked for February 12, 2027, with Catalyst arriving the following year. "Atlantis comes February 12 of next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one," he said. No more specific window within 2028 was provided.

Both games were announced together in December 2025. At that time Catalyst was positioned for a 2027 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The project is being developed by Crystal Dynamics using Unreal Engine 5 and is published by Amazon Games. It represents the studio’s next-generation vision for Lara Croft after the conclusion of the Survivor Trilogy.

The official description for Catalyst places Lara in Northern India in the aftermath of a mythical cataclysm. Ancient secrets have been uncovered and powerful forces awakened. Treasure hunters from around the world converge on the region, forcing Lara to navigate rivalries and uneasy alliances while trying to prevent a larger disaster. The narrative framing suggests a story that blends exploration, conflict, and high stakes tied to the rediscovery of dangerous knowledge.

Legacy of Atlantis, the closer of the two releases, was itself delayed earlier. Originally expected in 2026, it shifted to February 12, 2027. Alix Wilton Regan portrays Lara Croft in both titles, taking over the role from Camilla Luddington, who voiced and performed as Lara throughout the 2013–2018 Survivor Trilogy.

The dual-game strategy reflects Amazon’s approach to the franchise since taking on publishing duties. Rather than spacing major releases several years apart, the company and Crystal Dynamics have opted for two distinct projects arriving relatively close together. Legacy of Atlantis appears positioned as a more focused or reimagined experience, while Catalyst is the larger-scale Unreal Engine 5 title meant to push the series forward technically and narratively.

Crystal Dynamics has faced repeated challenges in recent years. The studio, which operates under Embracer Group, underwent its fourth round of redundancies within a 12-month period as recently as March 2026. Despite the cuts, the studio publicly reaffirmed its full commitment to the Tomb Raider franchise and the ongoing development of the Lara Croft games. Amazon’s involvement as publisher has provided external resources and a clear release pathway even as the developer navigated internal restructuring.

Amazon’s interest in Tomb Raider extends beyond games. The company is also developing a live-action Tomb Raider series for Prime Video starring Sophie Turner. The existence of parallel game and television projects underscores the broader investment in the character and setting across multiple media.

For players, the confirmed 2028 window for Catalyst removes the uncertainty that had surrounded the title since its original 2027 targeting. The extra development time may allow Crystal Dynamics to refine the Unreal Engine 5 implementation, expand the scope of the Northern India setting, or address any remaining production hurdles. At the same time, the delay means the gap between the end of the Survivor Trilogy and the next full-scale adventure continues to stretch.

Legacy of Atlantis now becomes the immediate focus. Its February 2027 date gives the series a near-term release after several years without a new mainline game. How that title is received will likely influence expectations for Catalyst the following year. A strong performance could build momentum heading into the larger 2028 release, while any missteps would place additional pressure on the subsequent game.

The Tomb Raider franchise has experienced multiple reinventions across its three-decade history. The shift from the classic era to the Survivor Trilogy brought a more grounded, origin-focused tone and higher production values. Catalyst appears intended as another evolution, moving Lara into a new region with fresh mythological stakes and next-generation technology. The additional year of development suggests Amazon and Crystal Dynamics want that evolution to land cleanly.

Until more details emerge, the schedule is now clear for the fans. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis arrives on February 12, 2027. Tomb Raider: Catalyst follows in 2028. Both star Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft and are published by Amazon Games. The confirmation from Jeffrey Gattis ends months of speculation and gives the series a defined path forward after a period of uncertainty and studio upheaval. Fans will have a new Tomb Raider experience in early 2027, with the more ambitious Catalyst still on the horizon the year after. The extra time may prove beneficial for a project that has already been in various stages of development for several years. For now, the 2028 date stands as the official target.
