Back in August, Activision got a lot of flak after it was revealed that
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy would only be including one disc instead of three. The disc would only include the original
Spyro the Dragon game, while
Spyro: Ripto's Rage! and
Spyro: Year of the Dragon would have to be downloaded via a download code.
Activision also published the
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy last year, and all three games were included in one disc so it isn't like they couldn't do the same for
Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The main problem isn't the fact that maybe all three
Spyro games didn't fit in one disc, but that it requires players to have an internet connection in order to play the other two titles; making a physical release of the game pretty much useless.
IGN has reached out to Activision for clarification and the developer confirmed that
Spyro: Ripto's Rage! and
Spyro: Year of the Dragon will, indeed, be requiring a download code.
"
The trilogy will ship with content from each of the three games, including the entire first game and a subset of levels from games 2 and 3. In order for the full Reignited Trilogy offerings, a day one update is required".
When IGN asked for further clarification, Activision explained that some full levels from
Ripto's Rage! and
Year of the Dragon will be included in the disc and will be playable without the day-one update, but not the whole games. In order for players to play
Spyro: Ripto's Rage! and
Spyro: Year of the Dragon, they will have to connect their console to the internet and download them.
Activision have really shot themselves in the foot with this, since releasing
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy in physical form is only really giving players access to the original
Spyro the Dragon game and not the whole trilogy. While it is true that most people have access to the internet these days, servers for this generation of consoles won't be around long after the next generation arrives, which means that any
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy title after that will only give players access to the first game, which is disappointing any way we look at it.
Explore the expansive realms, re-encounter the fiery personalities and relive the adventure in fully remastered glory. Because when there’s a realm that needs saving, there’s only one dragon to call.
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will be available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on the 13th of November.
