Respawn Entertainment's
Apex Legends launched today for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. However, the free-to-play battle royale spinoff of
Titanfall does not support cross-play between the three platforms. At least not yet.
Speaking to VG247, Respawn's design director Mackey McCandlish explained that cross-play between platforms is something the team is interested in, but they are first focused on the game's launch.
“Cross-play is definitely an opportunity; it’s not something at launch,” said McCandlish.
“It’s definitely something we’re aware of and interested in. I can’t speak to whether or not we’ve had specific conversations. Right now it’s just like: ‘Let’s launch the game’.”
McCandlish's statement is echoed on the
Apex Legends FAQ page, which stages Respawn is "always working on new features and improvements we can add to our game."
More and more developers of multiplayer games have been working to enable cross-play, especially since Sony has eased its restrictions. Currently,
Fortnite, Minecraft, and
Rocket League are among the biggest games to support the feature. While some developers have admitted enabling such a feature would be impossible for older titles, EA and Respawn have had the luxury of launching
Apex Legends at a time when cross-play is among the top-requested features for a game.
Apex Legends only launched today so it's likely the team is focused on other issues, but knowing cross-platform play is on their minds is comforting.
