Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to be the most gritty and realistic installment in the long-running first-person shooter series. Though a reboot of the iconic subseries of the same name, it will supposedly be a more accurate represenation of its namesake than anything we've seen before. That's why Infinity Ward felt it was important that your player-character should be equipped with a wrist-mounted Tamagotchi.
You're forgiven if you just glanced at your calendar to check whether April 1st had rolled around again. As to not entirely break your immersion, if you don't want it broken, the feature is entirely optional. However, if you do activate, you'll have to take care of it. How exactly? By feeding it with kills. That's right. Your cute, little pocket monster is bloodthirsty.
Joe Emslie, the art director of the upcoming installment, recently participated in an interview with
Game Informer in which he revealed that the feature existed as well as explained how it came to be. If you hadn't heard, in-game clocks and watches will display the time accurately — based on the time that you've got set on your system. According to Emslie, that feature was added early in development.
The
"Tamagunchi" was added around the same time as a bit of fun. Why it's been renamed? Probably to avoid copyright claims or something.
“This little thing on your wrist, every time you get a string of kills, it goes, ‘Ya-ta!’ and it makes a little noise, then you look at it, and it evolved out of an egg,” Emslie explained — and appeared to be wholly sincere.
“Tamagunchis are fed by the player’s performance in multiplayer. It’s just this little active wristwatch thing.” The art director went on to bluntly reveal that, just like real Tamagotchi pets,
“if you don’t take care of your Tamagunchi, it will rot and die." So you'd best be racking up those kills if you don't want your virtual pet's blood on your hands.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25th, 2019.
