Popular 4X strategy series Civilization was announced to be making its way into the Nintendo Switch, back in September of this year, in the form of Sid Meier's Civilization VI. The series know for its explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate gameplay released the latest entry back in October of 2016 and will be releasing for the Switch on the 16th of November.

While the announcement sounded promising at the time, new information has curbed some players' enthusiasm after Nintendo's version of Civilization VI will be doing away with online multiplayer mode. The news comes from Reddit user WinneonSword who spotted this information on the Nintendo eShop's site for Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

At first, it was speculated that Sid Meier's Civilization VI publisher 2K would eventually be releasing online multiplayer, it just wouldn't be available at launch. Eurogamer reached out to 2K for clarification and the publisher denied the rumour, confirming that the game will simply not feature online multiplayer.

"Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes support for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players via a Wireless Network. It will not have online multiplayer", said the spokeperson contacted by Eurogamer.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI on the Nintendo Switch not featuring online multiplayer is definitely disappointing news since it has pretty much become the norm for titles in this genre to feature online multiplayer. The game can still be played locally if players find someone else that owns a Switch and the game, so not all is bad news. Nevertheless, this is definitely something to consider before purchasing Sid Meier's Civilization VI on the Switch, since it may not provide players with the experience they are looking for from a title like this one.
