Production on Mortal Kombat 2 has started in Australia, and producer Todd Garner just dropped another major reveal (via SFFGazette.com) after that recent Johnny Cage tease.
He shared a photo of a chair on the sequel's set, and it's on that we see the "MK 2" logo along with Baraka's name. Yes, the fan-favourite brawler will indeed be part of the sequel, no huge surprise after previous rumours he'll be an antagonist alongside the evil Shao Khan.
The latter is reportedly looking to conquer Outworld, and we're guessing Baraka will be among those serving the big bad.
What we don't know right now is who will play him. It's possible that a stand-in is being used on set because the character will be brought to life primarily with visual effects. However, we're hearing relative unknown CJ. Bloomfield (The Secrets She Keeps) may have been tapped to star as Baraka in the movie.
A general of the Tarkatan Horde, he's served as an antagonist throughout the series, serving Outworld and its Empire while being loyal to the half-Tarkatan Mileena and her father Shao Kahn.
Baraka made his debut in Mortal Kombat II as the first playable Tarkatan of the series and has been a recurring character ever since.
In this movie, Karl Urban will lead the cast as Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford will play Emperor Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam has been tapped to bring Edenian King Jerrod to life, Ana Thu Nguyen is set to star as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman is Netherrealm demon Quan Chi.
Joining them are Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph as Jade and Kitana, respectively, while a number of familiar faces - such as Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson - are also expected to reprise their respective roles from the first instalment.
Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater has penned the screenplay, while Simon McQuoid is back in the director's chair. According to a recent logline, "The sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who defend our reality which is known in Earthrealm against the Outworld."
Mortal Kombat 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.
