If there's one thing that the
Mortal Kombat video game franchise is known for, it's the copious amounts of gory violence that it includes. New Line and Warner Bros. are currently working on a live-action movie based on the game series and, according to its screenwriter, the film will be no different to the source material.
Greg Russo is the writer of the
Mortal Kombat movie (as well as the
Resident Evil and
Saints Row movies). He recently did an interview with
Comicbook.com in which he revealed that the film will be R-rated and earn it.
In terms of the content, yeah. I mean we're ... I think there's always a thin line, you know, you don't want to be over the top, right? With your violence and I don't know that that's really going to ... that may put people off. I'm not sure that's even necessary. So you want to be truthful, but you also you don't want to be so ridiculous and gratuitous that you may turn people off in the wrong way. So I would just say that it's going to be faithful to the games, but yeah. And it's going to earn it's R rating, I guess I'll say that.
This should be expected, given that the writer has previously mentioned that the
Mortal Kombat movie will not only include fatalities, but fatalities that
will be accurate to the video games.
Based on Russo's statement, it sounds as if the movie will be similar to the games in terms of its overall violence and gore, but won't quite be on the same level as them — as to not put off mainstream audiences. That's certainly fair given that the gore included in the
Mortal Kombat video games is quite vomit-inducing.
The live-action Mortal Kombat movie will arrive in theaters on the March 5th, 2021.
