A couple of weeks ago, we found out that id Software and Bethesda's upcoming
DOOM Eternal would be featuring a Battlemode Multiplayer Mode, which will see players taking on the role of the Doom Slayer and fighting demons controlled by other players.
This new Battlemode sounds completely different from the Deathmatch Mode seen in previous entries in the long-running
DOOM series, which is actually a good thing; considering that Deathmatch in
DOOM(2016) was not really well-received.
According to
DOOM and
DOOM Eternal Director, Marty Stratton, Deathmatch will not be making a comeback in the latest entry, as they have decided to shift their focus to the brand-new Battlemode as their primary multiplayer mode.
"
No traditional multiplayer mode. Battlemode is our primary multiplayer mode. The cool thing about it is it’s ripped straight from Doom; it’s the combat players want and love, you’re familiar with the gameplay, playing as a Slayer," explained Stratton in regards to the new multiplayer mode.
DOOM(2016) was very well-received, and this was mainly due to the fact that its gameplay mechanics were very refreshing when compared to other first-person shooter titles — with
DOOM encouraging players to always be on the move during fights instead of strategically finding cover to regain health.
"
When you look back to Doom 2016, we kind of did something more traditional. Skill vs skill twitch vs twitch. It didn’t have any of the components of Doom that people loved from the campaign. It didn’t have the slayer or demons in a meaningful way. It just kind of fell flat so we really flipped the script on it and decided we need to develop this internally, we need to pull it from what Doom is all about, demons vs slayer."
Stratton has also revealed that they wanted to make the Multiplayer experience feel almost exactly like the innovative Single Player campaign, allowing players to take on the role of the Doom Slayer and slaying demons. In simpler words, they wanted to make Multiplayer feel like the main game.
"
In 2016, we discovered we need to lead and not follow. In the single player, we lead. And we owned it, we made a Doom game, we didn’t necessarily care about the trends or anything. In the multiplayer, we took a little bit of this and a little bit of that and it became obvious to fans and obvious to us that’s not what we wanted to do. We developed Doom: Eternal's multiplayer internally and we really focused on making the best multiplayer possible. It feels like Doom but with our friends."
DOOM Eternal is still a few more months away from releasing, but everything id Software and Bethesda have shown fans about the game keeps getting them excited for it — and the fact that they've gone as far as making the Multiplayer Mode feel just like the game's main campaign, shows their commitment to delivering the experience that fans of the series deserve.
DOOM Eternal puts you in control of the DOOM Slayer as you blow apart new and classic demons with powerful weapons in unbelievable and never-before-seen worlds. Experience the ultimate combination of speed and power as you rip and tear your way across dimensions with the next leap in push-forward, first-person combat.
