You've watched the pros on their steams participate in countless competitive tournaments for
Fortnite, but now it's your turn to prove your skill. With the release of update v6.10, Epic is introducing In-Game Tournaments to
Fortnite.
"In-Game Tournaments are open to everyone and provide an opportunity for every player to compete directly alongside the pros for prizes and glory," Epic detailed.
Located in the new "Events" section of
Fortnite Battle Royale, each tournament will have a series of scheduled dates and times for which they will run. Each scheduled tournament is independent of each other, meaning scores will be wiped clean and you'll have a fresh start each time. With each new tournament, players will compete over the course of several hours to earn as many points as possible. Points are earned through high placements or eliminating opponents in a match. As the competition progresses, you'll be matched with players with similar point standings.
Initially, these tournaments will feature a target score that if you reach will award you with a pin that highlights your accomplishment. Looking down the road, this pin may advance you to the next round of a tournament or qualify you to win prizes.
Interestingly, In-Game Tournaments will be cross-play enabled, so players from all platforms will be competing against one another - as equals - regardless of if they are playing on mouse and keyboard, controller, or touch-input device. This may sound like an odd choice, but Epic justifies the decision based on how professional competitors have fared against one another.
We’ve been observing the performance of controller players in our Summer Skirmish, PAX West, and Fall Skirmish tournaments while playing against mouse and keyboard players at the highest levels of competition. Competitors such as NickMercs, Ayden, KamoLRF, and AmarCoD have shown that controller players can be successful while competing against some of the best PC players in the world.
Combining everyone into a single competition will allow for players to compete with their friends regardless of platforms and will allow us to place a single shining spotlight onto the world’s best players, increasing prize pools and player exposure from our competitions.
Epic has posted an initial schedule for In-Game Tournaments over on their website. Over the next few months, they'll be improving the tournaments feature to allow events that span multiple rounds as well as implementing an "exciting and varied schedule of tournaments for players of all talent levels, featuring new scoring formats and support for additional modes."
Later this year, all players will have the opportunity to qualify for the 2019 Fortnite World Cup through a "Showdown Royale" event hosted with the In-Game tournament system.
