A potentially game-changing rumor is making waves across the entertainment and tech industries. According to well-connected journalist Alex Heath, Disney is seriously considering purchasing Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite and Unreal Engine.
Heath, former deputy editor at The Verge and current co-host of the tech podcast ACCESS, shared the details during an appearance on podcast The Town with Matt Belloni. He stated that multiple senior executives at Disney are actively interested in acquiring Epic, though opinions within the company remain divided.
The idea of a Disney-Epic merger does not come out of nowhere. The two companies already share a close working relationship. Fortnite has featured numerous high-profile collaborations with Disney properties, including Star Wars, The Incredibles, and Disney Villains. These crossovers have been among the most successful in the battle royale, showing clear synergy between the brands.
In February 2025, Disney acquired a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games. That investment already gives the media giant a meaningful foothold. A full acquisition would give Disney control over Fortnite’s massive player base, its metaverse ambitions, and perhaps most importantly Epic’s industry-leading Unreal Engine.
While most people associate Epic with Fortnite, the company’s technology reaches far beyond games. Unreal Engine powers everything from blockbuster films and television shows to architectural visualizations and virtual production. Heath specifically highlighted its heavy use in Disney projects, including The Mandalorian and many other productions.
This technological angle becomes even more relevant following recent developments. Just weeks ago, OpenAI’s Sora video generation service shut down in late March 2026. Disney had been a major investor in that project. With Sora no longer an option, Unreal Engine’s proven real-time capabilities could become even more valuable for Disney’s film and television pipeline.
Any potential deal would face significant hurdles. Epic founder Tim Sweeney retains majority control and has historically shown strong attachment to the company’s independence. Chinese conglomerate Tencent holds a large minority stake, which would also need to be addressed in any buyout scenario.
Heath noted that Sweeney appears committed to building Epic for the long term and making decisions that ensure its legacy continues. However, he suggested that if Sweeney ever chose to step back, Disney would be the most natural buyer.
The rumor arrives shortly after Epic conducted substantial layoffs, cutting more than 1,000 jobs. The timing coincided with the Sora shutdown, though Heath views the staff reduction as part of a broader industry correction rather than a sign of financial distress. He explained that many companies overhired during the 2020 pandemic boom and are now adjusting as the market normalizes.
New Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro recently mentioned Epic during a shareholder address, which has added fuel to speculation about deeper involvement between the two companies.
A successful acquisition would be one of the largest in gaming history and would give Disney unprecedented power in interactive entertainment. It could open the door for tighter integration between Disney’s film, television, and theme park divisions and Epic’s platforms. Imagine deeper, persistent experiences featuring Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar characters within Fortnite or new virtual worlds built specifically for Disney storytelling.
For Epic, becoming part of Disney could provide massive financial stability and access to one of the world’s most valuable entertainment libraries. However, it would also raise questions about creative independence and how Fortnite’s freewheeling, creator-driven culture would fit under a major corporate umbrella.
