While the first
RAGE, which launched almost 10 years ago, tried to embrace darker, more mature themes, the upcoming sequel will leave "realism" behind, heading into a more colorful and gaudy direction.
RAGE 2 is the unexpected and colorful baby of a collaboration between Avalanche Studios (
Mad Max, Just Cause) and id Software (
DOOM, Quake), the acclaimed creators of the original
RAGE.
According to id Software Studio Director Tim Willits, the fact that
RAGE 2 will feature one, huge map (unlike the first one that was divided into bigger and smaller sections) allows the developers to create a more cohesive and satisfying experience. Willits described the original
RAGE as "
fifty shades of brown" with a pretty monotone color palette, but it's no longer the case in
RAGE 2 that is way more vibrant.
RAGE 2 will include multiple biomes, from deserts, to jungles, to wetlands, and each and every one of them is apparently distinct enough to make you want to explore it further. Willits also confirmed that you won't have to play
RAGE to understand what's going on in the sequel. Learn how id's collaborating with Avalanche to make an all-new total package that builds on what the original got right below:
In the year 2185, humanity’s numbers are dwindling. Ruthless and bloodthirsty gangs roam the open roads and the tyrannical Authority seek to rule who remains with an iron fist. You are Walker, the last Ranger of the wasteland. Robbed of your home and left for dead, you’ll tear across an unforgiving wasteland battling bloodthirsty gangs to find the tools and tech needed to take the fight to The Authority and crush their oppressive rule once and for all!
RAGE 2 will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 14, 2019.
