It's been a rough launch for
Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Sadly for the developers, most of the criticism has been geared toward the overall business model of the game, rather than actual gameplay.
EA has
faced massive criticism regarding
Battlefront 2's
use of microtransactions and loot boxes - so much so that the publisher decided last minute to
temporarily remove all in-game purchases until further notice. Getting to that point though was particularly rough, with reports that big, bad Disney - who owns the
Star Wars franchise - had to step in and have a word with EA before they seriously damaged the brand.
Now Lucasfilm has issued a more public statement on the matter. A Lucasflim spokesperson told the Washington Post,
"Star Wars has always been about the fans — and whether it’s Battlefront II or any other Star Wars experience, they come first. That’s why we support EA’s decision to temporarily remove in-game payments to address fan concerns.”
It's a pretty textbook PR response, something one would expect from the giant Disney machine, but it's nice to hear from them anyway. EA has made it clear that microtransactions will return at some point, though its unclear how big of an impact they'll now have on the game and progression system.
