Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is enjoying a massive surge in following the conclusion of Andor Season 2. The multiplayer shooter, originally released in 2017, hasn't seen an update in over four years, but that hasn't stopped an influx of players from revisiting the game.
The resurgence has led to increased calls from the community for EA to green light Battlefront 3. And according to a former DICE producer, there are discussions being had, but we shouldn't expect any formal announcement anytime soon.
Over on Reddit, former DICE live producer Mats Holm revealed that the developers who had previously worked on Battlefront 2 want to return to for a third game.
"Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together," Holm said.
Unfortunately, the likliehood of Battlefront 3 happening anytime soon is low.
"I don't expect battlefront 3 to be announced at the end of this rally," he cautioned, adding: "But overall, yeah, I think there are people who are talking about it."
Based on Holm's comments, it sounds like there are informal discussions surrounding the prospect of Battlefront 3, nothing official.
"They dicuss news over coffee and lunch, and especially if it's news that touches their business (because that's a common thing they have toghere [sic]) news like this is bound to hit their "off topic" slacks for sure," he continued. "Will anything come out of it? No idea. I hope so, would love to see a new Battlefront game."
Battlefront 2 launched in November 2017 and got off to a rocky start thanks to its unpopular microtransaction system that was viewed as "pay-to-win." Players could purchase loot boxes containing gameplay-adffecting items with real-money, giving them significant advantages over others.
After temporarily disabling them, EA reintroduced a revamped microtransaction system in March 2018. These changes were part of a broader overall of the game's progression system that was viewed more much favorably.
Loot box and progression issues aside, Battlefront 2 was actually a fun game that offered an authentic Star Wars experience. The game included a variety of multiplayer modes, including the poular Galactic Assault and Starfighter assult.
EA supported Battlefront 2 with post-launch content for a couple of years with the final update, The Battle on Scarif, serving as the last major content update. The Battle on Scarif was inspired by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the standalone film that directly inspired the creation of the hit Disney+ series Andor.
At this point, EA no longer has the exclusive license to developer Star Wars games, which means technically another studio could developer a new Battlefront game. However, it would have to be licensed by Lucasfilm Games first.
So could Star Wars Battlefront 3 happen? Possibly, and it likely will, but probably not years from now. After all, EA and DICE are all-in right now on Battlefield 6, which is expected to release next year.
