Around this time, we usually start to hear all sorts of rumors about video games supposedly in development. News of these games typically leak ahead of the summer's E3 event. And with E3 2021 set to take place in June, we've got a juicy rumor about an upcoming Marvel video game said to be in development at Square Enix.
In his YouTube video addressing E3 2021, game journalist Jeff Grubb talks about the possibility of a Guardians of the Galaxy game being in devleopment.
"I heard Guardians of the Galaxy is gonna be made at Square Enix and now, yeah, that's real. That's real. Guardians of the Galaxy. Square Enix. Another Marvel game. I guess we'll see," Grubb said on The Game Mess Show.
Even though Grubb seemingly confirmed the game's existence, he was did say it should be taken with a grain of salt -- as is the case with all rumors. After all, Square Enix hasn't yet officially confirmed the game.
Grubb acknowledged that he wasn't sure if the game will actually be at E3 this summer, but did note that he wasn't the only one to hear about this rumor.
"It's out there. It's going to be the kind of thing that's going to be the source of speculation," he said. "When I'm not the only one who has it and everyone in the world has it, at that point I'll do my best to kind of confirmw hat I can confirm. Square Enix is apparently in the works of a Guardians of the Galaxy game."
While he seems convinced that the game is real, he couldn't say what type of game it would would actually be. This wouldn't be the first Marvel game that Square Enix has worked on. Most recently, they published Marvel's Avengers, an action role-playing brawler from Crystal Dynamics. Unfortunatley, Marvel's Avengers has so far failed to live up to Square Enix's financial expectations, but it's still being supported with post-launch content.
Given the nature of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it would make sense for this rumored game to be another multiplayer action brawler, but that's only speculation.
This also wouldn't be the first video game based on these Marvel characters. In 2017, Telltale Games launch Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, an episodic adventure game based on the comic book series.
Despite the disappointment of Marvel's Avengers, it appears that Square Enix is confident in the potential success of a Marvel video game. And with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie in development, the hype could be a nice boost to sales.
