Following the game's official announcement and the near-universal acclaim of Marvel's Spider-Man fans were unsurprisingly eager to get a look at Marvel's Avengers at E3 2019. Unfortunately, the reaction to the game's A-Day prologue wasn't as great as many hoped.
While the little snippets of gameplay seen during the prologue certainly made some fans happy, it was difficult to find someone who liked all of the designs for the main six Avengers. In fact, there was a sizeable contingent of viewers who were upset to see that heroes like Thor and Captain America looked drastically different from the versions seen in films like Avengers: Endgame.
Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, creative director Shaun Escayg reveals that the folks at Crystal Dynamics expected such a response prior to releasing any actual footage.
"I mean, we knew we had that challenge..." Escayg said. "We're going up against a 10 year history of movies. And you know, people forget really quickly, but when the first movie came out, they had the same problem. People were upset with the way these heroes looked. So we knew going in that we would always have that struggle."
Although some may argue that Escayg and the developers should have made some changes if they knew the response wouldn't be positive, the creative director said they wanted their focus to be on "more on [the] original storyline" and to keeping with the "DNA of the characters in the comics."
Marvel’s Avengers is currently slated to launch on May 15, 2020 and features a voice cast that includes Troy Baker as Bruce Banner, Laura Bailey as Black Widow, Travis Willingham as Thor, Nolan North as Iron Man, Jeff Schine as Captain America, and Sandra Saad as Ms. Marvel.
