Netflix announced today that Devil May Cry, an anime series adaptation of Capcom's video game franchise, will premiere on April 3rd.
The announcement was accompanied by the reveal of the show's opening sequence. Fittingly set to the bass-thumping tune of Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'" -- another well-known product of the early 2000s -- the high-octane opening credits are fueled by pizza, weapons. and the threat of demons.
"Demon hunting goes best with Rollin’," Netflix wrote.
Devil May Cry is based on Capcom's popular action-adventure series of the same name. The video games follow an orphaned demon hunter named Dante who makes it his life's mission to avenge his mother's death by killing all demons.
"Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms," the series description reads. "In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck."
Back in September, Netflix shared an official teaser for the series, giving fans a taste of the demon-hunting action that awaits.
Although based on Capcom's video game franchise, Netflix's Devil May Cry series is created by Adi Shankar, who also developed the Castlevania anime series as well as the Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix animated series based on Ubisoft's 2013 video game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Both series were met with positive reviews which bodes well for this upcoming adaptation.
“Rest assured, we are working very hard because we love the franchise and because we want to deliver something great,” Shankar said back in September. “Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform — period.”
The series is produced by Studio Mir. The South Korean animation studio has previously worked on The Legend of Korra and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, so again, there's a lot to be excited about here.
Capcom's Devil May Cry series first debuted in 2001. Since then, there have been over five games released in the mainline story, with the most recent being 2019's Devil May Cry 5. It's one of Capcom's most successful franchises with over 32 million copies sold worldwide. The success of the games have led to numerous adaptations and spin-offs in the form of novelizations, comic books, and even animated series. We can now add anime to the list.
