Netflix is preparing to enter the high-fantasy arena once again with its animated adaptation of Magic: The Gathering. After years of development, the project is finally moving forward under new leadership, and expectations are high that it could become the streamer’s most successful fantasy series to date potentially even bigger than The Witcher or Vox Machina.

The Witcher started with massive promise. Henry Cavill’s Geralt, strong world-building, and thrilling monster hunts made the first season a standout. However, the series gradually lost its way, prioritizing spectacle over the deeper themes of grief, morality, and consequence that defined the books and games. Many fans felt it failed to capture the full richness of its source material.

Magic: The Gathering now has the opportunity to avoid those pitfalls and deliver something truly special.

Announced in 2019, the Magic: The Gathering series has been in development for nearly seven years. Early involvement from the Russo brothers and other high-profile names generated excitement, but the project has since moved to new hands. Terry Matalas (known for 12 Monkeys, MacGyver, and Star Trek: Picard) is currently the showrunner, and his track record suggests he understands how to balance complex lore with compelling character-driven storytelling.

Netflix has already proven it can succeed with animated fantasy. Arcane became a critical and audience darling, while the live-action One Piece adaptation surprised many with its faithfulness and charm. These successes show that when Netflix commits to quality and respects the source material, the results can be outstanding.

Magic: The Gathering has over three decades of history and an incredibly deep multiverse. The game centers on powerful Planeswalkers who travel between planes of existence, summoning creatures and casting spells in epic conflicts. With countless planes, characters, and storylines already established, the series has an enormous pool of material to draw from without running out of stories anytime soon.

This built-in depth gives the adaptation a significant advantage over many other game-to-screen projects. The creative team can select the most cinematic and emotionally resonant tales while introducing new audiences to the Magic universe.

To succeed where The Witcher stumbled, Magic: The Gathering needs to focus on several important areas:

  • Character Depth: The Witcher often sidelined supporting characters who were far more prominent in the books. Magic must give its ensemble including iconic Planeswalkers and creatures with room to breathe and grow.
  • Tone and Themes: Magic has darker, more complex elements than many realize. The series should lean into moral ambiguity, sacrifice, and the consequences of power rather than rushing into constant action.
  • Faithfulness with Flexibility: While sticking to the spirit of the game is crucial, the animated format allows for creative interpretation. Getting the characters and their motivations right will be more important than literal accuracy in every detail.

Because it is animated, the series also avoids some of the pitfalls that live-action adaptations face, such as recasting controversies or budget constraints on large-scale battles.

Prime Video has found success with its own fantasy animated offerings, particularly The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, both based on Critical Role’s Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. Those shows benefited from authentic character chemistry and strong storytelling rooted in long-form actual play.

Magic: The Gathering offers something different but equally compelling a vast, colorful multiverse filled with god-like beings, ancient conflicts, and high-stakes magical warfare. If executed well, it has the potential to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Vox Machina while attracting both longtime card game fans and completely new viewers.

With over $1 billion in annual revenue, Magic already boasts a massive and dedicated fanbase. A quality animated series could expand that audience significantly and cement Netflix’s position as a major player in high-fantasy television.

The road ahead is promising. If the creative team learns from The Witcher’s missteps, respects the depth of Magic’s lore, and delivers strong character work, Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering could become the definitive fantasy animated series of its generation.

While we still don’t have a release date, the project is clearly moving forward. For fans of epic fantasy, this is one to keep a close eye on.
