Mass Effect TV Series Showrunner Disputes Report That Scripts Were Rewritten for Non-Gamers

Daniel Casey, co-showrunner on Prime Video's upcoming Mass Effect television series, has pushed back on a recent report claiming the live-action adaptation underwent rewrites to be "more appealing to non-gamers."

Earlier this month, The Ankler published an insider report on Peter Friedlander, who recently took over as head of TV at Amazon Prime Video. The Mass Effect television show came up as one of the subjects, with the outlet describing it as a "pricey genre drama." While official details about the adaptation have been scarce, the report suggested it is "on the verge" of a series order. The part that raised eyebrows, though, was the claim that Friedlander had reportedly requested script rewrites to make the show appeal to "non-gamers."

That framing left a lot of people scratching their heads, given that Mass Effect is already one of the more mainstream sci-fi video game franchises out there.

Now it seems that claim might not hold much water. Casey was recently asked by a fan on Bluesky about the accuracy of the report, and while he couldn't get into specifics, he made clear the "non-gamers" angle didn't match his experience.

"So I can't get into the specifics of what I'm working on (NDAs and all that), but for what it's worth, that Ankler article caught me just as off guard as it caught you," Casey wrote. "I have no idea where that 'non-gaming audiences' quote came from or who said it, but that's not something anyone has ever said to me."

Casey's comments should be a bit reassuring for fans nervous that rewrites could water down the source material. For what it's worth, Amazon's Prime Video has already shown an ability to faithfully adapt source material with its Fallout series.

Based on Bethesda's hit role-playing franchise, Prime Video's Fallout live-action series has successfully adapted the beloved video game franchise. The series has struck a good balance between accessible storytelling for newcomers and fun Easter eggs for longtime fans. While it doesn't adapt any specific storyline from the games, it does take plenty of inspiration from them.

That may be a bit harder to do with Mass Effect as the trilogy of games are known for their heavy worldbuilding and cinematic storytelling. It's possible the series will adapt the main premise of Mass Effect, while perhaps not going into the extreme detail and dense sci-fi aspect of the games. Whether or not that will appease fans or appeal to general audiences remains to be seen.
