Gwent is coming back. That was the small but important confirmation CD Projekt Red offered ahead of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past’s first major public showing, and it is one of the details fans asked about most once the expansion was announced.
Community and social media manager Marcin Łukaszewski settled the question on X when a player hoped the new expansion would include more of the in-game card game. His reply was simple: confirmed.
Songs of the Past is a full-scale expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, not a small content pack. CD Projekt Red has compared its scope to Blood and Wine, the 2016 add-on that closed Geralt’s last major chapter until now. The new expansion is scheduled for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Fool’s Theory co-developing alongside CD Projekt Red.
Gwent outgrew its original role as a side activity almost immediately. The card game became one of The Witcher 3’s most played systems, then spun off into its own title, and still never left the base game. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine both added new cards, opponents, and regional flavor. Blood and Wine even introduced the Skellige deck and a dedicated tournament in Toussaint.
The same pattern is expected here. New locations and characters usually mean new cards tied to the story, plus fresh people to sit across the table from. CDPR has not listed specific decks or tournament structures yet, but the confirmation itself means Geralt’s next adventure will not leave the tavern tables empty.
Songs of the Past is designed as a narrative bridge toward The Witcher 4, with Geralt still in the lead before Ciri takes over the next mainline game. The Gamescom presentation later showed a new region, Letten, and a chain weapon that visually connects Geralt’s kit to Ciri’s future combat style. Separate coverage has described the story as a mystery centered on Dandelion.
A free Witcher 3 Remastered update is scheduled for September 29, 2026, for existing owners. That overhaul is meant to modernize the base game before the expansion arrives the following year.
There are still open questions. Exact card lists, how large the Gwent additions will be, and whether Songs of the Past includes a full tournament in the style of Toussaint have not been detailed. For a lot of players, though, the important part is already settled. When Geralt returns in 2027, there will be another round of Gwent waiting for him. Will you be joining him?
