After much anticipation, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics finally released the first official trailer for Marvel's Avengers at this year's E3. But while this teaser provided fans with a lot of information on the game's story, it was noticeably light on gameplay details.
Fortunately, various interviews with the developers have revealed further details on the upcoming title. Speaking of which, while speaking with IGN, lead combat designer Vincent Napoli discussed numerous aspects of the game — specifically cosmetics, gear customization and skill trees.
First off, Napoli reportedly told the site that while gear will grant various active and passive abilities, they won't alter the appearance of playable characters. Instead, players can only change their heroes' looks with a separate set of cosmetics.
"There's so many Captain Americas that they want to show," the developer said, making it clear that each character will have a wide assortment of cosmetics associated with them. "Even within that, there is the customization within those costumes as well. Some customization color schemes and things like that, within those costumes. But one of the cool things is that we're even collaborating on our unique versions of those as well. So, we're pulling from fan favorites and these ones. From all corners of the Marvel universe. We're also able to create a Crystal original version of Thor and a Crystal original version of Captain America as well."
In short, like nearly every other superhero game, Marvel's Avengers will have a plethora of alternate skins for players to enjoy, including some based on their iconic comic book looks and a few original designs.
Finally, Napoli addressed what he called a "pretty in-depth skill tree" by saying that the "layout is very distinct" for each Avenger, as characters like Black Widow and the Hulk have vastly different skills.
All in all, when it comes to customizing individual heroes, it sounds like Square Enix considered nearly every angle. However, until the official launch of Marvel's Avengers on May 25, 2020, we likely won't know if they succeeded at making every hero unique.
