As video games begin to evolve and expand both technologically and narratively, it forces those who appreciate the medium to become curators of the history of the genre. Because of this, with every new console or sequel to a game or game system, there are always remasters or ports of classic titles that many may not have heard of.
From Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot to Assassin's Creed and Ratchet and Clank, history and legacy are important. Back in the late 1990s, video game developer KOEI Tecmo launched the Monster Rancher franchise for the original Playstation.
Monster Rancher puts a twist on the monster fighting genre by allowing the player to take care of and help grow their monster so that they will be strong enough to fight in tournaments. However, the catch is that depending on how the monster is raised will decide how the monster fights.
Recently, a new port of the sequel was announced to be coming to the Switch and Smartphones, and KOEI Tecmo has released a brand new gameplay trailer to build excitement. Make sure to check out the footage below and make sure to share your thoughts in the comments!
The game tasks players with raising a variety of monsters to fight in tournaments, with the game deciding how to raise the monster, which then determines how the monsters fight. A notable feature of many games in the series is the ability to generate a random monster dependent upon discs that the player provides for the game to read.
Monster Rancher 2 releases for the Nintendo Switch and Smartphones this fall!
