MultiVersus has an official launch date. The Smash Bros.-esque platform fighter, which features characters and stages from various Warner Bros. Entertainment franchises, had previously released in an open beta that ran from July 2022 to June 2023 before shutting down temporarily to allow for improvements.
Well, multiple improvements have been made and MultiVersus is now ready for its full release on May 28, 2024.
“The team has heard your feedback and learned a lot from our open beta,” game director Tony Huynh said in the latest dev update video. “We’ve been working hard on a variety of changes and updates to deliver an improved gameplay experience.”
One of the biggest changes made has been the game engine. MultiVersus is now running in Unreal Engine 5 which will improve the game's visuals and character lighting.
Additionally, Player First Games have rebuilt the game from the ground up to support a new netcode to provide a more consistent, world-class online play experience. "There will be consistent game performance no matter what platform you're playing on," Huynh promised.
In addition to these technical improvements, MultiVersus is set to receive additional content updates that include the addition of "some really exciting brand new personalities to the roster." Current characters will also receive new attacks and combat mechanics.
For those who don't want to participate only in competitive PvP, MultiVersus is getting a new PvE mode. While we don't know the specific details, the new mode will introduce additional ways of playing with unique rewards.
MultiVersus is a platform fighter that has drawn comparisons to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. The game features characters from a variety of Warner Bros. properties, including DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network, Game of Thrones, Tom & Jerry, Gremlins, Rick & Morty and The Iron Giant. Some notable names among the game's 23 playable characters include Batman, Bugs Bunny, Shaggy, Wonder Woman, Marvin the Martian, LeBron James (from Space Jam), Blak Adam, Gizmo and more.
The game was incredibly popular early on, reaching 20 million players just one month after its open beta release. But the daily peak player count soon fell, dropping below 1,000 players for the first time just seven months after launch. The loss in player activity was attributed to a lackluster second season, which was light on new content.
With these new improvements and additions, it's possible that MultiVersus could find new life. It helps that the game will be free-to-play on release. As we saw in the open beta, the game will be supported with microtransactions like a season pass. When it returns, MultiVersus will be available for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
