One of the biggest and most surprising announcements to come out of Microsoft's E3 conference was the localization of
Phantasy Star Online 2, which will be debuting in North America in spring 2020 on Xbox One. The long awaited online RPG will be free to play on Xbox One with no limitations.
While this news was certainly exciting, it did not come without major questions — like what about PlayStation and Nintendo?
Phantasy Star Online 2 has been available on multiple platforms in Japan for quite a while now, so the fact that it was announced exclusively for Xbox One in North America caught gamers by surprise. Even the press release made no mention of it being a timed exclusive or anything.
Well, thanks to a lengthy interview between Giant Bomb co-founder Jeff Gerstmann and Xbox head Phil Spencer, we now have confirmation that Phantasy Star Online 2 will eventually release on more platforms. Spencer, unfortunately, couldn't comment on the game's release in other regions like Europe and the Middle East because
"Sega's ultimately responsible for it," but he did at least confirm that
"it will end up on all platforms."
Spencer didn't specify exactly what platforms
Phantasy Star Online 2 will release on, but his "all" comment seems to at least suggest PlayStation 4 (and the next next-gen PlayStation), Project Scarlett (the next-gen Xbox), and Nintendo Switch. We also don't know when we can expect it to arrive on these other platforms, so for now the only way to play it is through Xbox One.
Phantasy Star Online 2 will be available in spring 2020 for Xbox One.
