CCP Games has been trying to expand its
EVE empire for quite some time now. Back in the PlayStation 3 era, players had a chance to check out
EVE's spin-off titled
Dust 514. The free-to-play game was directly connected to
EVE Online, as the player's actions in one game affected the political, economic, and social status of the other. Ultimately, the experiment failed and was officially shut down in 2016.
It looks like yet another CCP effort to capitalize on
EVE: Online's success has backfired, as the successor of
Dust 514, codenamed
Project Nova, will undergo some major changes even before its alpha tests start. In a special note, CCP announced that they "
will not be moving forward with the upcoming invite-only Alpha until further notice," as
Nova's current form does not live up to CCP's vision.

We hope you understand that we need to take a step back and return to the drawing board, where we will spend more time figuring out how all this hard work can translate into something better and more meaningful for the EVE Universe. Remaining true to our vision of Project Nova’s future in connection with EVE is essential. That is the only way we will be able to continue creating memorable experiences that ensure you, our ineffable players, are satisfied and make us proud as developers," CCP explained.
Project Nova was officially announced two years ago, but the title was shown publicly for the first time just a month ago during this year's prestigious
EVE Vegas expo. At its core,
Nova is a standard MMOFPS focused on a boots-on-the ground combat. Unlike
Dust 514, Project Nova will not tie into
EVE Online when it launches, but the studio plans to connect both games after its indefinite release.
Project Nova is the upcoming dark and thrilling first-person co-op shooter set in the dystopian sci-fi universe of EVE Online. Project Nova features tactical co-op PvE and explosive PvP modes, with a strong emphasis on mastery and strategy. Project Nova's gameplay will be co-evolved with the community - be there from the start to shape the game's journey.
Project Nova is a game without a final name or a release date.
