Next year could be a big year for Respawn Entertainment as EA hinted that two of the developer's projects could release by the 2019 holiday season. During the publisher's second quarter fiscal 2019 earnings call, prepared remarks by CEO Andrew Wilson offered some insight into next year's releases.
"Across multiple studios, we have new projects underway, including games from Respawn that are slated to launch by next holiday season," Wilson revealed.
Although Wilson didn't specifically name any titles, his comment of "games from Respawn" strongly suggests that we'll be getting two releases from the studio next year. Looking at what's in the pipeline, Respawn was working on multiple projects when the studio was acquired by EA in 2017, including an Oculus Rift VR game first announced in 2017, a third
Titanfall game, and a third-person
Star Wars game that was
revealed to be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at E3 2018.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is an action-adventure game set shortly after the events of
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Not much is known about the plot except that it's an original story around a surviving Padawan. At the time of the announcement, it was revealed that
Jedi: Fallen Order will be released during the holiday 2019 season, so there's not much surprise here.
The second game to be released in 2019 is more of a mystery though. With
Star Wars: Battlefront II releasing in 2017 and
Battlefield V releasing this year, EA is in need of a first-person shooter for 2019;
Titanfall 3 could very well fill that void.
It's important to note that Wilson said these games will release "by next holiday season," meaning they can come at any point within the next year. However, with EA releasing BioWare's
Anthem in February, it's unlikely the publisher will want to front-load the calendar. So in all likelihood, both games will release in the second half of 2019, but will hopefully be spread out enough as to not cannibalize their sales.
