BioWare's upcoming science-fiction shooter looks like a fantastic multiplayer game, but as we've learned with Bungie and
Destiny, story is incredibly important when building a fictional universe. To that end, BioWare unveiled today the first story trailer for the game.
The trailer is fairly short but gives us a general overview of the background story, including the emergence of a new enemy threat who seeks to harness the limitless power of the Anthem.
While the trailer isn't terribly specific, IGN recently spoke to lead producer Michael Gamble, who shed some light on additional story details regarding Anthem. Specifically, he talked about the Anthem itself, which creates "chaotic cataclysms or events." IGN sums up his statements:
The Anthem is a force for both creation and destruction. Gamble refers to it as "unknowable." It was a force that the former gods/creators of this planet harnessed in order to build things, but they never left a blueprint for how to use it, and the planet was never completed.
Facing constant threat from the dangers of the unforgiving planet, the humans retreated to the city of Fort Tarsis where they rely on giant walls for safety. Of course, that's in combination with the lancers, skilled pilots who don powerful javelin suits.
However, as it was revealed to IGN, a character by the name General Tarsis formed the Legion of Dawn to keep the population safe generations earlier. And this is who we presumably see at the end of the trailer. As IGN explains:
Over the centuries, conflict within Tarsis' legion resulted in the formation of various factions, each with their own unique motives. The Dominion, an aggressive military group from the north is one such faction.
One of their leaders, The Monitor, believes that he knows how to properly handle the Anthem of Creation. There's a specific place The Monitor needs to get to so he can control the Anthem, which is near Fort Tarsis' territory.
Again, this is just a taste of the story Anthem will seemingly offer players. The game is set for release on February 22, 2019.
