There's only 9 days left to play Anthem before the game goes offline permanently. EA is shutting down the game's servers on January 12, 2026.
The game is an online-always multiplayer so once EA turns off the servers, that's it.
The decision has led to a growing debate in the fan community about what to do about modern games facing similar issues.
Obviously, if a game's playerbase doesn't warrant the continued cost and operations of high-price servers, a gaming company isn't going to continue to provide access at a loss. But there's also the fact that a product that gamers paid money to play is no longer playable.
At this point, shoudl EA/Bioware release the game's code to fans so that they can host servers themselves?
The playerbase for Anthem was quite large at the game's launch back on February 22, 2019. Reports on first-week sales for Anthem indicated that approximately 2 million units were sold.
But a lack of compelling end-game content doomed the title, and ambitious plans for an Anthem 2.0 reworking of the game never materialized.
On a world left unfinished by the gods, a shadowy faction threatens all of humankind. The only thing that stands between these villains and the ancient technology they covet are the Freelancers.
