Despite all of the attention on
Anthem right now, with it being a brand new IP and all, BioWare apparently hasn't forgotten their roots. In a mid-summer update, the studio revealed that even though much of the focus is on
Anthem right now, they still have teams working on their fan-favorite franchises, specifically
Dragon Age and
Mass Effect.BioWare general manager Casey Hudson offered the following in his message to fans:
And yes – we hear loud and clear the interest in BioWare doing more Dragon Age and Mass Effect, so rest assured that we have some teams hidden away working on some secret stuff that I think you’ll really like – we’re just not ready to talk about any of it for a little while.
We've known for a while now that the next
Dragon Age has been in the works, as BioWare writer Alexis Kennedy revealed in 2017 he was working on segments of his storyline. Hudson himself even acknowledged the existence of a new
Dragon Age game in a tweet in which he referred to it as a
"live" experience, meaning "designing a game for continued storytelling after the main story."
As for Mass Effect
, well, the fate of this was more of a mystery. EA was never going to fully abandon the franchise, but the lackluster response to
Mass Effect: Andromeda resulted in the series being put on hold. So with
Anthem at the forefront and
Dragon Age also seemingly on the horizon, it's likely we'll have to wait even longer for a new installment in the
Mass Effect franchise. Still, this should lend some hope to fans.
In all reality, we're probably years away from a new
Dragon Age or
Mass Effect, but fans can look forward to the release of
Anthem on February 22, 2019. BioWare is also working on "some amazing plans for the coming year" for
Star Wars: The Old Republic.
