Heading into The Game Awards 2025, rumors were swirling about a major new Star Wars game reveal. Much of the speculation centered on the long-awaited Knights of the Old Republic Remake. While that didn’t prove to be true, what we did get was a spiritual successor, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
Developed by Arcanaut Studios, a new studio comprised of veteran developers and led by Casey Hudson (director of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy), Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a narrative-driven, single player RPG. Players will "step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth."
Star Wars: Fate of hte Old Republic is still in early development, so details are light at the moment. However, we did get a first look at the game in the form of a teaser trailer.
Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive saga across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness.
“Working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the defining experiences of my career,” said Casey Hudson, Game Director at Arcanaut Studios. “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since - crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark. It’s a dream come true to once again collaborate with Lucasfilm Games.”
"The Old Republic era is a rich and beloved part of the Star Wars™ galaxy, and we are thrilled to be exploring a fresh story that we’ve never seen before in Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic,” added Douglas Reilly, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games. “Arcanaut Studios shares our enthusiasm for the galaxy far, far away, and their plan for this new narrative is inspiring. We believe fans will be delighted by the journey that awaits them, and we can't wait to share more."
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most beloved and influential Star Wars video games ever made. Developed by BioWare and released in 2003, it's considered a masterpiece of the RPG genre, and praised for its deep story,c ompelling characters, and innovative moral choice system. Although we headed into The Game Awards hoping for a remake, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic may prove to be something even better.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson told StarWars.com. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is currently in early development for PC and consoles.
