THE WITCHER: Netflix Shares First Look At Henry Cavill As Geralt of Rivia In Upcoming Series

Henry Cavill, who is best known for playing Superman in DC's cinematic universe, it temporarily hanging up his spandex suit as he heads towards the fantasy universe of The Witcher. Last month, it was confirmed that Cavill will play Geralt de Rivia, the lead protagonist in Netflix's adaptation of the popular series of novels. Today, the streaming service shared our first look of the actor in costume.

As you can see, Cavill is sporting Geralt's signature grey hair, although the wig being used is questionable. There there are also quite a few differences between his character and the version we've seen in the videos games. Most notably, he's missing iconic the prominent scar across his left eye and his eyes are also not yellow. He's also cleanly shaven which is also a departure from the version the Geralt we saw in The Witcher 3. He kind of resembles an elf we would see in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Of course, it's important to remember that the games are based loosely on the books and are, rather, their own interpretation of the story being told. So perhaps we should embrace any differences in the Netflix adaptation. On the bright side, Cavill does take a swig from a flask in the clip, so clearly he's embodied the character quite nicely.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, “The Witcher” is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

Starring alongside Cavill in Netflix's The Witcher series is Freya Allan (The War Of The Worlds, Into The Badlands) and Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust, The ABC Murders) as Ciri and Yennefer, respectively. The white-hair Ciri, who was prominently featured in The Witcher 3, is a young princess of Cintra and Geralt's adopted daughter. The flame-haired Yennefer is a sorceress and Geralt's main love interest. Other cast members include Jodhi May (Game of Thrones) as Queen Calanthe; Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as her husband, the knight Eist; Adam Levy (Snatch) as the druid Mousesack; MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, the head of the magical academy at Aretuza; and Millie Brady as the outcast princess Renfri. Netflix revealed two more additions to the cast; Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks) and Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards) will play Cahir and Freya, respectively.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for The Witcher series. The script for the 8-episode first season is complete and showrunner Laura Schmidt Hissrich previously said it could be 2020 before the project is ready to go.
