POKEMON TCG Turns 30 And Puts A Pikachu In Every Single Pack

Pokemon is going big for its birthday. The Pokemon Company has revealed the full English product lineup for Pokemon TCG: 30th Celebration, the set built to mark 30 years of the trading card game, and it launches worldwide on September 16th.

That worldwide date is itself a first. According to the official Pokemon press site, this is the first-ever simultaneous global release in the trading card game's history, with more product waves following later in the year.

The headline feature is a love letter to the mascot. Every single booster pack guarantees a Pikachu card, and there are 30 unique Pikachu designs in all, each drawn by a different artist. The packs are also fully foil, including the basic Energy cards.

A New Rarity And 30 Years Of Reprints

The set introduces a brand-new rarity called the Futuristic rare, with neon, forward-looking artwork. As TheGamer and Comicbook.com report, the first two revealed are Mewtwo ex and Mew ex, with Greninja ex and Sylveon ex also joining as new Pokemon ex cards.

There's also a Classic Collection: 30 reprinted cards spanning the full 30-year history, each carrying a special "30" stamp and foil treatment. These are celebration pieces, so they aren't tournament-legal. A quick honesty note: the exact 30-card list circulating online is a LEAK, flagged as "likely" by dataminers, not an official reveal yet.

One detail collectors will love is the Pokemon Center exclusive promo. It's Nidorina, which sounds random until you remember Nidorina is number 30 in the Pokedex. A nice little nod to the anniversary baked right into the giveaway.

What's In The Boxes

The first wave on September 16th is stacked with products, including:

Elite Trainer Box (9 packs), with a Pokemon Center version carrying the Nidorina promo; a Poster Collection featuring the Kanto legendary birds; Greninja ex and Sylveon ex Collection Boxes; an Eevee Two-Pack Blister; and a Knock Out Collection. Later waves through October and November add Binder Collections, premium Espeon and Umbreon sets, and more.

Notably, the booster packs are sold only inside these special products. There's no standalone Booster Box for this set, which is bound to be a talking point for anyone used to buying by the box.

A little history for the occasion. The Pokemon Trading Card Game first launched in Japan in 1996, then reached the West in 1999, and that original Base Set is now the stuff of legend, with first-edition Charizard cards selling for eye-watering sums. Thirty years later, leaning the whole celebration on Pikachu and a stack of throwback reprints is a smart play to the nostalgia crowd.

The timing is loaded, too. Pokemon cards have been red-hot, with scalpers and resale bots emptying shelves the moment stock lands, and we've even covered the wilder side of that frenzy, like the time a store was robbed of its Pokemon cards and then set on fire. A set this hyped is going to test whether The Pokemon Company can actually keep it on shelves.

Why It Matters

30 years is a milestone, and this set is clearly aimed at both nostalgic collectors and the wave of new players who've flooded back into the hobby. We've been tracking the road here since the 30th Celebration's Japanese release date landed, and the worldwide rollout is the payoff. The big question is supply, because demand for anything Pokemon has been brutal lately. A simultaneous global launch should at least give every region a fair shot on day one, assuming the print run can keep up.

A guaranteed Pikachu in every pack is a fantastic hook, but the no-Booster-Box approach is a curveball. Which 30th Celebration product are you chasing first? Let us know in the comments.
