"
Genesis does what Nintendon't" was one of the most famous lines during the Sega Vs. Nintendo era in the 90s, back when Sega wanted to show that they were nothing like Nintendo. It's been a long time since and now Sega seems to be wanting to do what "
Nintendoes".
As reported by
Crunchyroll, Sega may be open to the idea of returning to the hardware and console manufacturing market. In an interview with
Sankei News President and COO of Sega Kenji Matsuraba entertained the idea of importing the AtGames Sega Genesis Flashback system to Japan. In regards to the growing demand for home game consoles in Japan, Matsuraba only said "
wait for a bit."
AtGames is a third-party console manufacturer that focuses on emulating the experience of retro consoles by getting the proper licenses to distribute the games. Sega and AtGames have partnered before back in 2005 and have released retro-inspired consoles that come with pre-installed games. Although hardcore retro gamers would probably talk you out of even considering to get one unless Sega made the consoles themselves.
It would be nice that Sega decided to follow in Nintendo's footsteps given that the
NES Mini and
SNES Classic Edition have proven to be such massive hits. If Sega made a similar bundle, those consoles would sale like hotcakes and maybe even propel them to make a new current gen console in the future.
