Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are slated to gain new competition within the gaming arena. We already know that Google is making big moves with its streaming service, but is it possible for a small company to enter this space?
It will definitely be difficult, but Slightly Mad Studios isn’t afraid of the challenge, and as such, the company has announced its plans way ahead of time. CEO of the company, Ian Bell, is the one who made the big announcement, but he has refused to talk about the exact specifications of the product.
According to Bell, the device is set to release in the next three years and should support up to 120 frames-per-second for Virtual Reality gaming. Additionally, the product should support all major VR headsets along with those in the pipeline.
Now, Bell went on to add that the hardware will have specs similar to a very fast computer two-years from now. We’re not sure what he deems as a very fast computer two years into the future, but certainly, we’re quite intrigued to find out more.
"We're in early talks with manufacturers of components so we can't say much more right now other than we have the designs specced out in detail," says Bell.
When it comes down to Slightly Mad Studios releasing exclusive games for the platform, it would seem as if there are no plans as of yet. The idea right now is to get the system into the hands of developers, and then the public.
“We think exclusives are 'exclusionary' but given that we'll be shipping a cross-platform engine to all developers it will be their choice. As of now, we have no plans to pay developers 'incentives' to exclude other hardware vendors,” Bell went on to add.
It should be very interesting to see how this system holds up against the future Xbox and PlayStation consoles that are set for a 2020 release. Now, if Bell is a man of his word, then the new console should hit store shelves by late 2021 or sometime in 2022.
