Sony's PlayStation Showcase was filled with surprises — from Insomniac's two Marvel games to Sony Santa Monica's God of War: Ragnarok — but perhaps none of the announcements were met with as much eagerness as the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The classic role-playing game, originally developed by BioWare and LucasArts, is getting a long awaited remake, led by Aspyr Media.
Aspyr is best known for its work on creating Mac and mobile ports of popular Windows games, like Sid Meier's Civilization VI, and for bringing multiple Star Wars games to modern gaming platforms, such as Star Wars: Republic Commando, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars Episode I: Racer. But this Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is no simple port, it's "completely rebuilt from the ground up" for next-gen consoles and PC.
"We’re rebuilding one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more, while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish," said Aspyr Media lead producer Ryan Treadwell.
Released in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most popular and beloved video games of all time. The award-winning RPG is set more than 4,000 years prior to the events of the Skywalker Saga, at the height of the Galactic Republic. Jedi and Sith are plentiful, and the evil Darth Malak is leading a growing legion of dark warriors. In the game, you ply as a Jedi, traveling across the galaxy to different planets to defeat Malak. Beyond the character classes you can choose from, KOTOR furthers your character customization by assigning Light Side and Dark Side points to the actions and decisions you make throughout.
“It’s telling a story that should feel very familiar and authentic to Star Wars fans. It tells stories about light and dark, about heroes, and the journeys that common people can go on to become heroes and figure out who they are,” said Orion Kellogg, executive producer at Lucasfilm Games. The game boasts an impressive 93 Metascore and 9.0 User Score on Metacritic.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake was announced as a console exclusive for PS5 at launch, which likely means it will make its way to Xbox at some point in the future. It's also coming to PC.
